AVCon 2016

So I attended my first ever convention, and yes, it was quite a few days ago now, and no, I am no good at keeping up with updates...

ANYWAY, lets talk about my time at AVCon 2016!

Friday

Had a very nice sleep in actually. I wasn't registered to set up AVCon with the other volunteers so I didn't turn up to the convention centre till around midday and when I got there? MAYHEM! The con had not even begun and the showbags were having problems. I threw on my volunteer shirt and spent the next 3 hours helping to fix things. 
Oh well, at least I got to watch the opening ceremony right in front of the stage with new friends. Watch Tabby's AVCon vlog on youtube to watch the dance/fight scene during the tragically short ceremony. As well as everything else that happened that night. An interview with WOLFSTAR is soon to come.

Saturday

WOKE UP LATE! Had to do my eyebrows on the bus, My hair was sticking up so I threw a wig on it, grabbed my labcoat and ran out the door. I was almost late to my first volunteer shift which consisted of... Babysitting. Although technically I was babysitting a room, not the children because their parents were not allowed to leave without them.
CUT FORWARD to me walking down artists alley in the four hours I had left till I had to leave for a birthday dinner and this was the result:

SKINNY MISTER you made me look so cute! (Find him on facebook) I feel kinda bad for wearing a black shirt though, his pen was running out a bit... BUT he was dressed as Tem from UNDERTALE, so awesome!. After that I went to the birthday dinner, slept through most of it and worked on my cosplay untill there were only the finishing touches left.

SUNDAY:

COSPLAY DAYYYYYY!
Started the day late for my shift, whoops I stayed up too late and overslept once again, then I missed my bus so I was half an hour late for a shift I got pulled out of anyway. This turned out to be a blessing because I was thrown into the group that helps out when more people are needed... Then I got to be Pikachu!

That is me, beside a random poketrainer. Seriously though the first thing that happened was a poke ball to the face. Then it was all trying not to walk into small children, dancing around, having people throw their arms around me and eventually, photos were taken. I am scouring the internet to find said photos because I couldn't get ANY!

After leaning down to small children and vehemently saying NUUUU to being captured, I finished my shift and went to go quickly finish my cosplay with the help of a friend in a nearby sandwich shop... 
 Lets finish this con off with a Yang! ;) 

Boom, nuff said.I think I look pretty good, and I am proud of what I managed to accomplish with a certain amount of help in making patterns, gauntlets and the finishing touches. There are some things I would tweak but overall? Solid attempt in my opinion.

Where is my brain?

Writer's Block got me like WHHAAAATTTT?

Seriously, I have no idea what to write about these days and I could try blaming Netflix (House is addictive! season 6 currently). It is Wednesday today and yesterday I visited our state's Maritime Museum. I got to play around on an actual ship; running around with my boyfriend and his brother, climbing into the tiny area where the cook sleeps. Funnily enough only myself and a couple small children also in the museum could fit, and only one at a time.

BOOM! Idea: Maritime art!

Pretty sweet huh? Who's idea was it to paint awesome pictures of ships on the ocean? Genius.

Disney MAKEUP!

Specifically, Eyes.

I was scrolling through google images looking for something to post today when I came across eye shadow art. So I have compiled a bunch of Disney related looks to share today. Alot of these are done with eyeliners, body paint, and just regular shadows... Maybe with a bit of glitter thrown in.

So pretty. I particularly love the last two containing Toothless and Baymax cuddling the "hairy baby" ahaha. I just love how creative people in this world can be. The range of colours and the precision used in these works of art are beautiful.

Art Attack

Is it Media or Medium? My teacher always tells me and I always forget XD

Today I wanted to talk about what I usually use to create my art works. I am currently studying Stage 2 (Year 12) Visual Arts. When you do art there will be things that just click like working big or small, quick or slow, music or silence, paint or pencil, realistic or cartoon?
Most artists will prefer a certain media or medium for their work.

Copic Markers
I started using copic markers last year at school, I do not own any myself but I have a set from school that the teacher gave me to keep for the year. They are the classic warm grey set of 12. I like this set because it's not as harsh as the cool greys and I can use it to create black & white art works, whereas if I had colours I would be limited to what I could draw.

Pros - Looks amazing

Cons - Price, takes practice, can bleed

Tip - Before investing in Copics, borrow some to see if you work with them. If you can't afford Copics start with Prismacolor Markers.

Prismacolor Markers
I only started using these recently and I love them. While cheaper than Copics, they're still not cheap. I use the Premier chisel tip primary/secondary colours set of 12, which I am loaning from school for the year.

Pros - Easy to use first time, don't bleed as much as copics

Cons - Price

Tip - Before investing in Copics, start with Prismacolor Markers.



Pencil (Faber Castell)
I love using the Faber Castell pencils, they are so smooth and good quality. I also use Crayola. If I'm desperate for a colour I'll use Derwents, the problem with Derwents are they are expensive, hard to sharpen and have a waxy finish. I bought a pack of Faber Castells and they are my favourites to use. I love using them in my adult colouring book (Star Wars), it's a great way to practice different colouring techniques.

Pros - Price, easy to find (target, kmart, big w)

Ink
I'm not sure what brand of ink I use, it it whatever is in the art storeroom at school. I have been using ink for about a year and I am still finding new techniques. I need to write them down though because I never remember them XD

Pros - Lots of different effects

Cons - Hard to control, takes a lot of practice

Tip - Experiment


Fineliners
I use Artline 200 fine 0.4 to outline pretty much all of my art work. My Marilyn Monroe piece used Artline Calligraphy makers and the Artline 210 Medium 0.6. 

Pros - Finishes a piece nicely, range of sizes, cleans up lines before colouring

Cons - Bleed - they bleed blue when used with copics, but NOT with Prismacolors.


Tip - If you press on the pen so the nib is pushed into the pen making it shorter, it will draw smoother but not last as long.

Moleskine
These little books can be found in Dymocks in sets of 3. They are small enough to keep in my bag for when I get a sketch idea, the paper isn't white but it is very smooth. 
Here is an artist who uses them quite a lot.

Visual Diaries (Jasart)
I got the Jasart book from my brother so I have no idea about price or availability. The corners are square not round with I prefer. The paper is lovely, it's not as soft as the art diaries I use for school (so pencil doesn't smudge as much) but it's thicker and stronger.

To the stars!

EXPLORE THE GALAXY!

Galaxy inspired art is so beautiful to me, with the blues and purples and pinks blending into each other like clouds and the stars... I thought I would share some of my favourite I saw today.

Both of these are from an artist on Youtube by the name of Qinni. As you can see, she is amazing and her work is so clean and gorgeous. The first picture reminds me of Rapunzel due to the colours and the innocence and youth in the girl's face. This distinctive art style of hers is very appealing to me.

Here we have Karina Joaquin's work. As you can see, a skeletal girl is drinking tea in the universe. I'm not sure if this skull is supposed to be inspired by the Day of the Dead, but it is an interesting piece that adds a pastel touch to the otherwise rich background.

Agnes Cecile, this picture is hair goals. Even though it is a drawing and the hair is watercoloured, I would love to have that hair. Even the white space in this picture adds to its beauty. Overall very well done.

Kate Ronshina? This is exactly how I have been feeling this week, my thoughts can be perfectly described with this photo. I love how simple the girl is compared to her galaxy cloud.

The only name I got for this piece of art was KSENIA, a japanese style with vibrant colours and an adorable skull clip? This picture is cute AND beautiful!

TheBestFangirl on Tumblr created this galaxy chibi, she has quite a few. I chose this one because it had more pink than my other photos and I wanted to incorporate that somehow. Super cute!

Scheduling problems

You know how these things go right? Sometime's the hooded people in the dog park that doesn't actually exist make it so the days of the week are moved around a bit...

WELCOME TO NIGHT VALE is a twice-monthly podcast in the style of community updates for the small desert town of Night Vale, featuring local weather, news, announcements from the Sheriff's Secret Police, mysterious lights in the night sky, dark hooded figures with unknowable powers, and cultural events.

Turn on your radio and hide. 

A highly entertaining podcast that puts me to sleep with stories about the town and their rivalry with Desert Bluffs as well as the cat that hovers 4ft above the floor in the men's bathroom at the radio station... Okay, I admit it is weird but I want to share some of the fan art associated with it. Also Carlos's beautiful hair. 

One thing about this podcast is that Cecil Baldwin's voice is glorious. I have not been able to get past episode 11 because I keep falling asleep...

What I absolutely love is the tattoos on Cecil's arms, although I'm not sure where they come from. From what I've heard on the Podcast, there have been no mentions of Tattoos or the eye on his forehead. Purple is quite clearly the main colour here. 

Honestly, as far as I know (hehehe) the town of Night Vale does not exist, but the podcast reminds me of if conspiracy theorists got a hold over the local radio station yet no one does anything about it. The crush Cecil has on Carlos is actually hilarious because he talks about it and Carlos's perfect hair, a lot on public radio.

As for the weather? Good luck getting an actual forecast for the day... You are 100% more likely to get a song instead! Gotta go, mysterious hooded figures approaching! *Don't look don't look!*

Hands?

One of the worst things to draw in my opinion

Hand's are very difficult for me to draw. I find it very hard to even draw my own hand as I can never quite get the proportions right. Despite this, more reference pictures help!

Reference pictures where you can see the different shapes and where the joints meet are very useful when drawing hands. Even more so if you get pictures showing many different positions for hands (this goes the same for feet) such as pointing, making a fist, or even holding something like a pen. If you can see an example of how a hand looks when doing these things you are more likely to get a proportionate hand.

Sexy, gorgeous ladies?

Recently I started getting back into drawing, and though I don't feel like I have enough content to share, I thought I would share some reference photos from Pinterest.

The biggest thing I have realised is that under no circumstances, when drawing pin-up, do you ever use a straight line. Women are curvy and pin-up poses show that.

Pin-up girls are sexy yet always leave a little to the imagination. Unless you draw them naked, like I did...

Anyway, not the point. From victory rolls to poodle skirts to army advertisements. Pin-up girls do it all, however the signature look is a cat eye, red lips and a cheeky pose.

Stark lines and Dots?

Pop Art

It's kind of weird in my opinion but that is the point. This portion of this blog allows me to write my opinion about anything. According to ArtyFactory:

"Pop Art was the art of popular culture. It was the visual art movement that characterised a sense of optimism during the post war consumer boom of the 1950's and 1960's. It coincided with the globalization of pop music and youth culture, personified by Elvis and the Beatles."

Most of what I have seen of Pop Art in the 21st century have been in old comic books and recently in makeup artistry.

Madeyewlook - Youtube

From what I can tell, Pop Art is characterised by strong lines and/or highly contrasting colours developing a vividness and unreal quality. As you can see from Madeyewlook's redition, she uses strong lines and keeps it simple yet vivid. Later she adds tears but that wass for fun and dramatic effect.

Roy Lichtenstein's Drowning girl

It is great for conveyng sadness as the tears are so obvious and in your face. They have a specific shape and with just a few lines, you can turn from sassy to sad.

Music is art.

Music is audible art, it paints a picture!

In your head. Music can transport your mind into any scenario, memory or sensation. Certain soundtracks remind me of books, specific P!NK songs remind me of when I was twelve and went to Perth on holiday.

My Top ten songs of this week:

These are the songs that get me out of my chair dancing around and feeling good. Sometimes, however, you can just sit somewhere comfortable, close your eyes and paint a picture in your mind of whatever the song inspires.

And then there are people with a rare condition called synesthesia, which means they can actually see sound as colour. Here is some synesthesia art:

These paintings are amazing representations of sound, you can basically see movement through the paint. So bright and amazing! I would love to know what sound inspired these works, especially the second one which reminds me of a waterfall. I have noticed that these paintings have quite dark backgrounds with lots of blues, with reds and pinks thrown in too. This could be because they are from the same artist, I can only imagine how they must view the world...
