Wow, I am bad at this!
Naming characters can be hard at times or incredibly easy. Sometimes you wake up in the morning and BOOM! you have this flash of inspiration and there is this character in your head; you know their name, look, motivation and even what their style of talking sounds like. Other times you have the vaguest idea that you want to write a story set in Victorian London and... what next? What is their name? are they Male? Female? Alien?
If you are just writing for a bit of fun, get some dice and roll for race! However, if you know your character backwards and forwards but still do not know what name suits them best? That's where the internet comes in handy...
Here are my top 5 random name generator websites:
- http://www.behindthename.com/random/ This website includes ethnicity as well as options for mythology and fantasy to narrow your search down a bit. It does however require you to provide a last name.
- http://fantasynamegenerators.com/ This website is actually more of a gateway to over 700 different name generators, be it for games, fan-fiction, Original Characters, or even babies.
- http://oobleck.org/steam/ Okay, this is a steam-punk/Victorian name generator which is awesome in general (It also includes titles for the aristocracy and scientists etc).
- http://www.mithrilandmages.com/utilities/CityNames.php City names? Town names? Shop names? This website has it all, and is completely randomized.
- http://random-name-generator.info/random/?n=10&g=1&st=3 This is a generic, simple website that creates names based on rarity and gender. That's it but sometimes simplest is best.
These websites are for those who have no idea where to start when it comes to naming; whether it be characters or future children or both. Have fun with your OCs!
